Commercial Recycling
What is the City of Sheridan Commercial Recycling Program?
As of July 1, 2007, the Sheridan City Council enacted significant changes to the refuse collection fees for commercial accounts. These changes were intended to ensure that refuse collection fees were equitable for all businesses, and to encourage recycling by offering discounted fees to participating businesses.
For an introductory period from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008, all businesses whose refuse is picked up by the City of Sheridan were given this discounted rate.
As of July 1, 2008, only those businesses that elect to participate in the Commercial Recycling Program will continue to receive the discounted rate for collection of refuse.
Recycling means good business!
In 2006, the City of Sheridan Solid Waste Division collected 7,154 tons of commercial waste. At 2.31 cubic yards per ton, that equates to 16,526 cubic yards of landfill space. Recycling 50% of our commercial waste would save nearly 8,300 cubic yards of landfill space each year!
Did You Know:
On a per-ton basis, sorting and processing recyclables alone sustain 10 times more jobs than landfilling or incineration.
Making new products from the old offers the largest economic pay-off in the recycling loop. New recycling-based manufacturers employ even more people and at higher wages than does sorting recyclables. Some recycling-based paper mills and plastic product manufacturers employ on a per-ton basis 60 times more workers than do landfills.
What is my monthly base sanitation rate?
The current monthly base sanitation fee for your front-load container(s) is calculated based on the cubic yards of refuse you dispose of, according to the following formula:
$7.4423
x
C (Refuse Container Size in Cubic Yards
x
P (Number of Collections per Week)
x
52 weeks
÷
12 months
=
Monthly Base Sanitation Fee
If you have a 4-yard dumpster picked up twice weekly, your monthly fee would calculate as follows:
$7.4423
x
4 (Refuse Container Size in Cubic Yards
x
2 (Number of Collections per Week)
x
52 weeks
÷
12 months
=
$258.00/mo.
How will this new program save my business money?
How much will I save?By choosing to recycle under this new program, your business saves in two ways:
1. The collection of your recyclable materials costs you nothing. You pay no collection fees on any approved recyclable materials placed in the recycling dumpster. Rental of the dumpster itself costs just $10 per month.
2. By meeting the commitment you make in your recycling agreement with the City, you will receive 30% off your monthly sanitation fee!
The following example shows what your new sanitation fee would be if you were able to recycle half of your refuse, using the example at left of the 4-yard dumpster:
$7.4423
x
4 (Refuse Container Size in Cubic Yards
x
1 (4-Yard Recycling Container) x
1 (Number of Collections per Week)
x
52 weeks
÷
12 months
- 30% (Recycling Participation Credit) +
$10 (Recycling Container Fee) =
$100.30/mo.
TOTAL SAVINGS = $157.70 per month, or $1,892.40 per year!
What do I have to do to participate in this cost-saving program?
In order to take advantage of the cost savings available under this program, you must sign an agreement with the City of Sheridan Sanitation Division, in which you:
1. Commit to recycling significant quantities of the following items for pickup by the City of Sheridan Recycle Division (requires rental of a four (4) or six (6) cubic yard recycling container under a separate
Recycling Container Rental Agreement with the City of Sheridan):
- Corrugated Cardboard
- Newspaper
- Mixed paper (Office Paper/Magazines)
- Plastics
- Plastics
- Metal (Aluminum and Steel Cans)
- Glass
-OR-
2. Demonstrate that your business has developed a significant internal recycling program through which you currently recycle the items listed above;
-OR-
In order to preserve the 30% introductory savings you are currently receiving, you must sign and return the enclosed recycling agreement no later than June 30, 2008.
How soon will I receive my new recycling container?
Containers will be delivered on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date your agreements are signed. There are a limited number of containers currently available, so it may be several weeks before you receive your container. You will continue to receive 30% off your sanitation fees until you receive your new recycling container.
Once your new container is in place, you will be required to sort your recyclables into the new container, and the container use fee of $10 will be charged to your account on a monthly basis according to your Recycling Container Rental Agreement.
Best of all, once you begin using your new recycling container, you will continue to receive 30% off your sanitation fees, AND you will not be charged for pickup of approved recyclable materials placed in your recycling container!
You may elect to participate in the program at any time; however, if your signed recycling agreement is not returned to the City by June 30, 2008, you will no longer receive the 30% introductory savings you are currently receiving on your sanitation fees. Under your agreement, you can elect to discontinue your participation at any time with 30 days written notice to the City.
